Artist Statement

Painting Itself …

My decision to pursue multiple styles comes from a desire to remain open to the painting rather than allowing a recognisable style to become a product. I am interested in what can happen when each work begins without the obligation to look like the last.

For me, style can easily become a kind of expectation: a set of visual habits that gradually come to represent the artist more than the individual work. I want to resist that expectation. Instead, I allow the subject, the process, the materials, and the conditions of each painting, to determine how the work develops.

Ultimately, the subject of my paintings is painting itself. I am interested in the act looking, making, altering, covering, discovering and responding. Colour, surface, gesture, composition, and material are not simply tools for representing something outside the painting, they are the content of the work.

The painting becomes a space in which decisions can remain visible, contradiction can coexist, and meaning can merge through the process of creation.

Not pursuing a signature style is therefore not a rejection of consistency, but a commitment to curiosity. What connects my work is not a fixed visual language, but an ongoing investigation into what a painting can be. Each work becomes an opportunity to begin again – to let the painting lead, and to remain attentive to what it is asking to become.

I am inspired by artists such as Francis Picabia, Sigmar Polke, Max Beckman, Edward Munch, Philip Guston, Paul Klee and Arshile Gorky.
